Should we help the homeless more?

For this project, I've learnt a lot of things about homeless people in the US. They are not like people thought, they just some hurting people. So we need to help them more.

This a worldwide issue because there are a lot of people who sleep on the street everywhere in this world. While the government prefer to put money into things such as road repairs rather than build more shelters to the homeless. Maybe many taxpayers support the government use money to improve some public facilities, however, helping more homeless people back to their lives can make our society better.

This project shows my exploratory results and I hope it can help you when you have a opportunity to explore my topic. First, here is a video I made that shows the summary and my argument about this topic. I have also found some vocabulary words that can help you understand this topic. Moreover, I posted summaries on two readings that relate to my topic with their links. Finally, this is my argument essay where I detailed my opinion on the issues.

Should we provide more shelters for the homeless?

Because economic instability leads to many people losing their jobs, lots of people become homeless, and that does not means they become useless. Some of them just need a chance; therefore, providing more and better shelters are  important to homeless people. If they get a place to stay at night to protect them from bad weather, they will not do something illegal, and that is the different way to support a safe society. However, it will cost a lot of money for government, and it will also have risk because we can not make sure these homeless people will become better and repay society.

Annotated Bibliography for the homeless

In “How to help the homeless in the cold”, the author Jim Kavanagh from CNN explains that we should call crisis hot lines to find professionals to help homeless people in the dangerously cold weather. He supports this claim by quoting some experts’ words. If you don’t know any hot line when you see the homeless who can’t even move in the cold, the best way to do is call the police. Also, we should find what they really need, food and blanket can provide them directly help, but not money or alcohol. Moreover, he talks about how sometimes the good intention could be counterproductive, which means even when you provide blankets to the homeless, they could still die on the street from the cold. Therefore we need to help them go to the shelters. Finally, he mentions if we really want to help the homeless, help out the helpers, the agencies that have the infrastructure and expertise can help the homeless effectively.

In “About Homeless Shelters”, an eHow contributor explains that How important the shelter for the homeless, and these shelters are better than them in people’s impression. He supports this claim by talking about what the most shelters look like, and they are all the non-profit organizations. Also, many homeless people can get treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. and some shelters help the homeless find jobs. Moreover s/he talks about shelters always provide more than homeless people's wish, because they can help them go back to living their lives. And shelters are not only in the big cities, but also every cities or states, because it is the worldwide issue. Finally s/he mentions some misconceptions about the homeless, like not all of homeless people choose this lifestyle and only few of them have mental illness.
